In November of last year, I began a portrait of Black Beard and displayed a slide presentation in front of a crowd of attendees at the American Society of Marine Artists in Charleston, SC. 2018 was the 300th Anniversary of Black Beard’s blockade of Charleston Harbor. The unfinished portrait is on the right.
“All For One” a recently completed commission, is based on a portfolio painting completed in art school. Dumas wrote the story to take place in the early 1600s, so I restricted a modern equivalent to the common palette available at that time consisting of black, white, yellow ocher and a warm red as the only source pigments to paint this 26″ x 18″ oil on linen work.
I just finished a small 12” x 9” oil begun on location and finished in the studio with additional research. It is of a sea rover who is attempting to recapture parakeets that got loose, originally taken from Australia. The idea that world travelers have been “migrating” species by virtue of their maritime travels for centuries was the inspiration for the final painting.
Bud Plant (budsartbooks.com) listed their best selling items for 2017 and Illustration Magazine #55 containing the feature on my art was on the list. I believe copies are still available. Illustration Magazine #55, © 2017 by Dan Zimmer / The Illustrated Press, Inc. www.theillustratedpress.com
